Upper Delaware Fly Fishing Report

Good Summer Fishing It has been a while since my last report. I simply have not had the time. Over the last week Baxter House has been crazy. I have been doubling up with my mornings on the Main Stem for Bass and Walleye and my afternoons on the West Branch chasing fussy Trout. In this same time period we were putting out 5 boats a day with the Project Healing Waters Program. We are proud to Join the DeBruce Fly Fishing Club and the Catskill Fly Fishing Museum in hosting our veterans for a few days of fishing on the Delaware. Currently we have fairly normal summertime fishing conditions across the region. This means that Trout fishing is pretty limited to the Upper East Branch and Upper Wes

SUNNY DAY BROWNS and Bass! Summer officially started this week and the Upper Delaware Rivers are at their normal summertime flows. This is a period where the Baxter House guide staff splits their time between floating the West Branch and the Upper Main Stem for Trout and the lower Main Stem for Bass and Walleye. This week I have been on the West Branch every day. At this time anglers will find good fishing on the West Branch but with some challenges attached. In the Upper River there is still a lot of algae in the drift and you need to regularly clean your fly and leader. The water is low and clear so approaching mature Trout is challenging. The Lower West and Upper Main Stem are clear of al

WEEKEND OUTLOOK This weekend looks like it will be a great weather weekend. Sunny skies and warm days are on tap so it should be perfect for outdoor activities. The Trout fishing is entering into early summer conditions. This is a time where a lot of the larger insects of spring are becoming scarce and the Trout are turning their attention to the smaller insects. At this time Sulfur Mayflies are the main staple in the trout's diet and this insect is emerging on all of our local rivers. Recently rainfall has been scarce. All Upper Delaware Rivers are now at low water conditions and wade access is about unlimited. Our Tailwater rivers the East Branch Delaware and West Branch Delaware are ice c

WEEKEND OUTLOOK! Sorry for being a day late with my weekend outlook. We had several large groups going out Friday morning and I could not get to the report. Here are some shots from yesterday. All of our guests had great action!. We are now having success with both Nymphs and Dry Flies. Right now conditions are excellent throughout the Upper Delaware System. The recent rainfall and cold weather have about every section of river in the correct temperature range for both Trout and Insects. This is also great news in the fact that anglers can now spread out and fish all of their favorite beats rather than crowd into the Upper East and Upper West branches. Anglers fishing this weekend will find

DAYTIME HATCHES ARE BACK! Over the last few days the Daytime hatches have picked up in a huge way. At this time the Invaria Sulfur hatch is established on the Tailwaters and there are Trout rising throughout the afternoon. At this time anglers who know the waters well can find Cornuta Olives in the morning, Invaria Sulfurs in the afternoon and a big mix of insects towards dark. Spinner activity has been good at the twilight time. Over the last few days rainfall and colder weather has really turned the conditions around throughout the river system. This morning the water temps are are 60 degrees or colder in all areas of the Delaware River system. Over the last few days our guides have had a

MORE RAINFALL AND CLEARING CONDITIONS Last night more rainfall fell on the Upper Delaware Region. Last nights rain was not much more than some passing showers but every amount of rain helps as we head into the summer months. The Rainfall combined with the cooler weather forecast should provide anglers with some nice fishing conditions this week. Tomorrow through Friday daytime air temps. are expected to stay in the 50"s to low 60's. This morning all of our local rivers have water temperatures that are within the range for good trout fishing. Most of our freestone rivers have water temps this morning around or just above 60 degrees. Throughout the day yesterday the turbidity and water level d

Heavy Rain in the Upper Delaware! Yesterday we had some heavy rainfall in the Upper Delaware region. This was the first real soaker in a long time. This morning all area rivers except the Upper East branch are running high and turbid. These conditions should be with us for most of today but I expect the water to drop very quickly. By tomorrow all of our rivers should be back to clear water conditions. The rainfall and the total cloud cover yesterday helped to drop water temperatures throughout the river system. This morning all of our local rivers have water temperatures that are within the range for good trout fishing. Most of our freestone rivers have water temps this morning around 60 deg

WEEKEND OUTLOOK! This weekend is one of the most anticipated weekends of the trout fishing season in the Upper Delaware. This is the time where the seasons greatest diversity of insect life will be active simultaneously. This season however mother nature is not completely on the side of us fly fishermen. Currently low water conditions are making things tough. At this time most all of the activity with the larger flies has shifted to well after dark. Daytime fishing is currently challenging but our guides have been using a variety of methods and a lot of persistence to keep our guests on the Trout. At this time all of our rivers are at low water conditions. The low water conditions combine

BUG WEEK! Bug week is upon us! This week has always been one of the most popular times in the Upper Delaware Region due to the diversity of insects and the action associated with the Big Green and Brown Drakes and their Spinners. This action is in full swing right now but most anglers are having mixed results. The low water conditions and the first heatwave of 2016 have the insects and Trout switched to mostly nocturnal activity. The amount of insects and rising fish just after total darkness is astounding. The last three nights the waters surface has been totally covered with Coffinflies. There should be a switch back to some daytime dry fly activity as soon as the Invaria Sulfur hatch bec
