Fly Fishing Report for the Upper Delaware and Catskill Rivers

Decent Fishing throughout the River System Over the weekend the Baxter House guides put a lot of time on the water. Several of us were doing 2 trips per day. Since my last report our guides have fished both Trout and Smallmouth Bass and covered lots of river miles. Overall the fishing is good. The main reason is the cooler nights and recent rainfall. The Trout are more active since the water temperatures dropped into a more suitable range. Over the weekend our trout trips had a steady pick of surface feeding Trout to keep busy with. We also did really good on our nymph rigs in some places. Yesterday I did 2 floats both for Trout.. My first trip was a nymphing float where we targeted a coupl

WEEKEND OUTLOOK This weekend should offer us fly fishermen some good opportunity to chase Trout again. The recent heavy rainfall has all of our rivers still running at much higher than normal summer flows. The rain that cam through was also accompanied by much cooler night time temperatures which have all of our rivers running cooler than what is normal for the last week of July. Currently all of our trout rivers are having water temperatures in the low 60's. The higher, cooler water has been a great break from the heat for our wild trout population. Currently there is an increased amount of activity with feeding trout in most areas of the system. The same conditions that are currently impro

High Water Summer Streamers

Now's your chance to toss big meat for big fish in the Summer sun. Normally this is an early or late season event however the last storm has put a lot of juice in the upper stretches of the Delaware system. We have been throwing 6 to 9 inch streamers for monster fish. 22+ inch browns have been demolishing the big flies and we have been very happy to see this. 8 weights and heavy tippet allow us to bring these monsters to net. This is a rare event mid summer and you should seize the opportunity while it lasts. Give us a call to book a streamer trip today. It will only last for about four more days. Night Fishing on the Upper Delaware River

Night Fishing on the Upper Delaware River Over the past few weeks the days have been long and hot with less bug activity than the spring hatches. The trout are tough to catch during the day even for an experienced angler, however don’t let that stop your pursuit of big trout. Night fishing is not for everyone. It’s dark and dangerous. Don’t go alone and only fish water that you know. Mice and frog imitations work well at night. Cast directly across a slow pool and slowly….SLOWLY inch your mouse or frog across the top of the surface. Stay tight with the line and strip set on any blow up you hear. You can’t see so it’s all ears and feel. Here is one of my secret night time creations. It

WEEKEND OUTLOOK HOT, HOT HOT has been the weather pattern lately. Summer has it's grip on the Upper Delaware region at this time. There is no better place to spend a hot day than out on the river so here are your options for fishing. Trout fishermen who plan on fishing in the coming days should be aware that a lot of the system has very warm water. The options for chasing trout at this time are the Upper East Branch, The West branch and the Headwaters of the Beaverkill and Willowemoc. The best action is very early morning and again from near dark until after dark. Our guides have been on the water on both the Upper West and Upper East branches and they are getting some nice fish for our gues

DELAWARE SMALLIES The hot sunny weather continues it's grip the Upper Delaware region. Currently we are chasing Smallmouth Bass pretty hard and limiting our trout trips to the upper sections of the East and West Branches. Yesterday Guide Zach and I had the Moore Family out for some Smallmouth fishing on the Main Delaware. They mixed it up with some spin and fly and had a great trip. The action right now is really good. The waters are warm and the fish are in high gear. Many time we have multiple fish chasing the flies back. Right now there is good action both on top and below the surface. I will not go too deep into the techniques we are using simply because yesterday's reort was very detai

Surface Action for Smallmouth Bass is hot! Over the last few days all of our guides have been busy. We have been fishing the East and West branchs for Trout but most of our trips have been focusing on Smallmouth Bass. Over the next few days we have about a dozen smallie floats scheduled and the action is hot! If you have not ever fished the Delaware for these exciting game fish now is the time to plan a trip. The action is almost totally on the surface now. THE REPORT - First the Trout - Over the last few days we have had trips on both the East and West branches. Guide Matt has been on the West daily and I have been on both the East and West. The insect action remains pretty constant and rel

Weekend Update The last week brought the Upper Delaware some unpredictable weather. Small cold fronts passed through the region most every day bringing us fast passing but heavy thunder storms. This weather has changed the river conditions but there is a pretty big difference from section to section. The most stable and predictable at this time is the Main Stem. It has been on the rise and much higher than last week. This will continue as long as the storms persist simply because all water here goes to the Main Delaware. The water temperatures have dropped a bit which is a good change for the lower river. The Beamoc Water and the Upper East and West are where the flows have been swinging.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK The photos in this post are from guide Matt's trips this week. Mostly on the West Branch Delaware. The Report The Upper Delaware has gone through some major changes in the last week. Summer has it's grip on the region now and the regular rainfall that was present all spring has disappeared. Currently most of the river system is warm with a few exceptions. For Trout fishing the only areas that are fishing well are the West Branch and Upper Main Stem. The Upper East has good Temperature but the fishing is highly technical. The Headwater of the Beaverkill and WIllowemoc are also cold. The Upper Main and West branch remain the best bet. Over the last week releases from Canonsvil
