Tampa Bay Fly Fishing Report

Improving Conditions The fishing in general has been off since the storm we had last week. The heavy rainfall and steady high winds really whipped the bay up. Today is one week since this storm moved on but the south bay is still showing signs from it. The normally crystal clear waters are still tannin stained. Since the storm we have also had negative low tides and not much water exchange in and out of the back country. These areas still have a lot of fresh water. For those of you who fish the south bay often you are aware of the inverted boat hull that has been on the flats just outside of Big Pass since hurricane Irma. During last weeks blow this hull moved north east all the way to the

Christmas Week Report The Baxter House Staff would like to wish all of our friends in the Fly Fishing community a Merry Christmas and Best Wishes in the New Year! The Report I was on a several week run of being on the water ever day. Over the last few days everyone was blow off the water as heavy winds and heavy rain hit our area. I was on the water with guests when the heavy rain started Wednesday afternoon. We were having great action until it became too miserable to stay out. Over the last 2 days just about everywhere got 4"+ of rainfall. In the South Bay area we also had heavy steady winds with some gusts over 70 mph. This type of sustained blow is sure to put a bump in the bay and fla

Upper Delaware Fly Fishing Report for December

The calendar may say its still fall but winter conditions are well under way across the Upper Delaware. Pretty much all the rivers are high and fairly cold. That can be a tough proposition when you're looking for lethargic winter trout. Last week, one of my hardcore anglers saw a weather window and gave me a call. The forecast called for 40° and gusts up to 10 mph. This time of year that's normally the best you could hope for. We actually ended up having a decent day, we boated 2 browns and a nice rainbow. The streamer action was pretty hot and we probably had a dozen fish hit the fly. Unfortunately, they just weren't staying on, which probably has to do with how they were taking it. The fis

Cooler Weather Spurs Hot Bite! Over the last few days we have had strong cold winds from the north. This front cooled our local waters a bit but did not have much effect on the fish. I have been out just about every day for the last 2 weeks including a stretch of nine days in a row. During this time period the best tide movement has been in the am hours which is also the coolest period of the day. The fish apparently were not put out much by the winds or chill, my guests had steady action right through the day. I had Dr. Bob down from NYC for 3 days of fly fishing. Lots of action including 1 day where he put about 60 fish in the boat. I also have a few of our Baxter House Fly Fishing Guide

Low Tides and a Cold Front We are now in a run of negative low tides that are perfect for getting out of the skiff and hunting fish on foot. We also had another 24 hour blast of cold north winds that dropped our water temperatures a bit. As has been the case with the last 2 cold bumps the Trout bite really turned on. Big numbers of mostly 12" to 16" Trout with the occasional big one mixed in. The cooler weather has not been too severe and the warmer water species are still on the feed. The last few days the snook bite has been on! If you work the structure, Points, Rocks, Mangroves and Docks your rod will stay bent. In the mornings it is super important to move your fly super slow.
