Upper Delaware Fly Fishing Report

LATE OCTOBER REPORT There will not be much change in the Upper Delaware action from this point until we are iced in. This will be my final update for the Upper Delaware fishing conditions for 2016. Look for me to begin blogging again around November 20. From late November through April I will be giving updates on the Florida Flats and Back Country action in and around Tampa Bay. THE REPORT The cold weather Blue WIng Olives are on the water daily now. Every day there is a great window of opportunity where the Trout are rising well. Most days the action is lasting from 3 to 4 hours in duration. If you have always wanted to see the heavy olive hatches in late autumn now is the time to get our

WEEKEND OUTLOOK - STREAMERS AND OLIVES The Upper Delaware region has been getting a blast of Indian Summer for the last week. There were several days this week where it felt like mid summer on the river. This is about to end as we are forecast to return to more seasonal weather tonight. The next few days are forecast for overcast skies with light rainfall. The air temperatures are expected to return to daytime highs in the mid 40's. this is great news and hopefully we can return to dry fly action for the better part of each day. The heavy releases from last week were cut back over the last few days to the point where the West Branch just below the dam was around 100 cfs. Today there is a

Over the Weekend we had pretty good action on all of our guided trips. Late Friday a much heavier release started from Cannonsville Reservoir which is still ongoing. The West Branch and Main Stem are now Bank full and running with varying degrees of turbidity. The turbidity is heavy up in the West and it lessens the further you go downstream. Overall the turbidity has made the Dry Fly fishing a bit easier and it has the streamer bite back on in the areas of heavy turbidity. Below is a nice streamer Brown from yesterday On yesterday's float we had a half dozen Browns in the 18" range come to net and we had about double that take the streamer that were lost in the heavy current. WEEKEND OUTLOOK Anglers planning to fish the Upper Delaware this weekend will find some really good action at low water conditions. Since my last report the Autumn Blue WIng Olive hatch has really established itself. The steady stream of cold nights and 50 degree daytime highs have these insect emerging daily. This weekend visitors will also find our foliage to be at or near it's peak for the season. The mountains are beautiful right now. All of our recent trips have had very good Nymph and Dry Fly activity. This week we had our first few trips in a long while where the better part of the day was spent on setting up on steadily rising Trout. I love the initial days of this amazing hatch bec

AUTUMN FISHING This morning we had a pretty heavy frost in the Upper Delaware region. For the next few days the trend of cold nights with nice days in the 50's is expected to continue. This is a perfect time to be out on the water. Anglers who plan to fish in the coming days will now find our fall foliage to be in full color. The leaves are now falling and the peak of the colors should occur in the next 2 weeks. Our guide trips have been going well and our guests are taking some nice fish. Anglers will find all of our rivers to be low this week. There is no rainfall in the forecast or release changes coming so these are the conditions that will around for a while. Over the last few days the

WEEKEND OUTLOOK This weekend anglers will find most of the Upper Delaware River System to have very low water conditions. The lack of rain and big cut back on the releases from Cannonsvile Reservoir have us scrambling for moving water. We are hoping that at some point today the release will be increased. Based on the this mornings flow rate of 1800 cfs. at montague NJ. An increase will be needed in the near future. Despite the low water the insect life has been good with lots of different insects on the water and in the air. The best action is in the afternoon Blind fishing Isonychia patterns is still productive but when the trout have been steadily rising Blue WIng Olives have been the fly

Good Fishing Continues Over the last few days the Fly Fishing in the Upper Delaware has continued to be good. Over the last few days the Dry Fly fishing has picked up considerably. On yesterday's trip we had several time periods where we were able to set up on steadily rising Trout rather than blind fishing the water. The insect life has been good with lots of different insects on the water and in the air. The best action is in the afternoon Blind fishing Isonychia patterns is still productive but when the trout have been steadily rising Blue WIng Olives have been the fly that has been getting it done. I always go to the CDC knock down dun on the flat pools and this has been paying off for o
