Upper Delaware Fly Fishing Report

Good Fishing Continues

Over the last few days the Fly Fishing in the Upper Delaware has continued to be good. Over the last few days the Dry Fly fishing has picked up considerably. On yesterday's trip we had several time periods where we were able to set up on steadily rising Trout rather than blind fishing the water.

The insect life has been good with lots of different insects on the water and in the air. The best action is in the afternoon

Blind fishing Isonychia patterns is still productive but when the trout have been steadily rising Blue WIng Olives have been the fly that has been getting it done. I always go to the CDC knock down dun on the flat pools and this has been paying off for our guests.

We are fully stocked with CDC Olives and Olive Cripple patterns so stop by the shop.

There are also lots of Caddisflies, Hebe's, Sulfurs and midges at times. Around 5:00pm the entire river has been bug soup lately.

Below the surface Caddis pupas have been the ticket. There are lots of caddisflies about and by our results it is clear the trout have been feeding sub surface on this species. Our best patterns have been Ice pupas in light olive and in cream colors. We have both of these in stock. below is a Ice Pupa eater from a recent trip

The las bit of advice I have for anyone who is fishing in the coming days is this. A few days ago the Main Delaware and our other freestones reached about their lowest flow rates of the season. Anglers need to picture the river at a much lower flow to be successful. Imagine the river about 50% smaller and then only fish the deep spots that would have remained at low flow. The Trout are simply not spread out at this time. Deep Pools, deep cuts in riffles and along the drop offs are the holding spots at this time. The remainder of the river is holding very few fish and they will not spread out until the Blue WIng Olive hatch become as reliable as as a clock. This will happen when the weather gets a little colder.

We have a few spots available for floating the Main Delaware and West Branch in the coming days. Give us a call today to plan a trip. 607-290-4022
