Upper Delaware Fly Fishing Report

WEATHER UPDATE Today we are finally getting some nice rainfall. There has been a steady light rain falling for most of the day. There have also been a few downpours that were of short duration. Overall the current weather should go a long way towards improving our freestone river conditions. At this time the stream gauges are just starting to show an increase in flow but I expect this upward flow to continue throughout the remainder of the afternoon and evening. Since I am doing this update the continued good fishing on the Main Delaware. Yesterday our guests really had excellent action. We had tremendous nymph action along the length of our float. We were also able to coax some nice rainbow

WEEKEND OUTLOOK! Anglers planning to fish this weekend will find all of our Upper Delaware Rivers to be on the low side. Currently the freestone rivers are really low. The East and West branches have minimal releases at this time. There is light rainfall in the forecast for the next 5 days. The current forecast is not predicting any substantial rainfall but it is predicting the type of weather conditions that usually provide exceptional fly fishing. If we have this prolonged period of overcast skies and light misty rainfall insect activity is sure to increase throughout the river system. Yesterday there was a marked improvement in insects activity throughout the day. Based on the forecast th

AUTUMN IS IN THE AIR The weather in the Upper Delaware has really cooled down over the last few days. We have had frost advisories the last 2 nights and I am seeing a lot of jackets and long pants around town. For the Upper Delaware river and Fly Fishermen this cooler weather is great news. Over the last few days there has been a definite upswing in insect activity. The last 2 days there have been insects on the water and in the air throughout the day. The Trout are not totally convinced yet and the surface feeding has remained sporadic but this will normally change quickly once the weather stays cool. We should see reliable dry fly fishing daily as soon as the Blue WIng Olive hatch gets est

Tennessee Tailwaters - Road Trip Report

Last week we traveled to East Tennessee for some Tailwater fishing on the South Holston and Watagua Rivers. This great fishery boasts 10,000 fish per mile trout populations and some of the more technical fly fishing you can find. We had 4 full days of fishing size #20 to 24 flies to Trout that range from yearlings to 25+". The Brown above measured 22" and took a #20 crippled midge pattern. For us Upper Delaware Anglers the biggest obstacle is getting used to the 6X tippet and the tiny flies. Once you come to terms with the rigging the fishing is pretty exciting and the action is usually steady. Our highlight on this trip was casting tiny midges to the rising fish that were feeding in or j

WEEKEND OUTLOOK This weekend anglers can expect to find pretty good fishing in some places. All of our guide trips have been very good recently but we are targeting specific river section to be successful. Here are the specifics. Currently the Freestone Rivers, Beaverkill, Willowemoc and Lower East Branch are in poor condition. They are very low in most places and the current is barely moving. We do not recommend fishing here until some substantial rainfall occurs. Our guides are now targeting the West Branch and Main Stem Delaware. This is where the water is and the action is very good. Anglers planning to fish here will find a very turbid release from Cannonsville Reservoir. This is a nor

STREAMERS AND NYMPHS I just got back from my Tennessee tailwater trip and was right back out on the Delaware yesterday. Below is a quick update on what's been happening. I will also be putting up a report on our road trip in the coming days for those of you who might be interested in joining us in 2017. Over the last week rainfall and cooler weather have continued to improve the Trout fishing on all Upper Delaware rivers. RIght now there is an excellent Streamer bite on the West Branch. The turbidity on this river is just about right. The trout are willing to chase streamers about any time of day. The fish are also much easier to approach with the dry fly in the off colored water. Below are

THE HOT ACTION CONTINUES! PLEASE NOTE- This will be my last fishing report until Monday 9/19/16 I am heading out for 5 days of fishing the tailwaters in Tennessee. Our guide staff will be available for Upper Delaware trips as usual. There are a few openings available in the coming days. I do not expect the fishing to change much from my current report during my time away.. Ken NOW THE REPORT The conditions for trout fishing in the Upper Delaware region are improving rapidly. Over the last few days there is autumn in the air. I am already seeing some color in the trees along the rivers and our nights have been brisk. COLD NIGHTS< COLD WATER< GREAT FISHING! The conditions for trout fishing in the Upper Delaware region are improving rapidly. Over the last few days there is autumn in the air. I am already seeing some color in the trees along the rivers and our nights have been brisk. These weather conditions combined with the 1000+ cfs. release from Cannonsville Reservoir have our Trout on the feed. Over the past weekend all of our guests have had excellent trips. Both Trout and Bass fishing are possible but the hot action has been nymphing for trout. Over the last few trips our guests have been running up the numbers on nymph rigs. Over my last few trips we have had lots of big mature wild rainbows come to

WEEKEND OUTLOOK Above is a nice Brown Trout taken on an ICE PUPA from under some nasty white water. This weekend anglers will have lots of options for fishing in the Upper Delaware Region. The fishing conditions have improved considerably in all of our rivers, lakes and reservoirs. This change has mostly been brought about by the cooler weather and especially the very cool nights. The West Branch and the Main Stem Delaware are in the best shape of all our rivers. This is due to the heavy releases from Cannonsville Reservoir to satisfy the Montague, NJ flow target. This morning the release from Cannonsville is at 1257 cfs. which is cooling the Main Stem throughout the entire range of the Trou

THE TROUT FISHING IS GETTING HOT! A Wild Rainbow from the Main Delaware taken yesterday Over the last few days the Trout fishing has really turned around. Over the Holiday Weekend our guests got in on some incredible action. On several of our trips we really ran the numbers up. The best action is on nymphs. Our guests have been hooking up double digit numbers on every trip with our nymph rigs. There are also hatches in some places that are coming on strong. We had great insect activity this weekend with both Isonychia and White Flies. There are some areas where Isonychia have been emerging steadily throughout the afternoon hours. This activity is not consistent yet over a wide area of

RELEASE CHANGES TODAY Early this morning the release from Cannonsville reservoir was increased to 1041 CFS. This is the second substantial release increase this week. These increases are releases to keep the Montague NJ gauge at the proper flow target of 1750 cfs.. AS long as there is no substantial rainfall in the Delaware drainage we can expect to see the releases stay in effect. We can also expect to see the increases fluctuate to maintain the flow target downstream. At the current release we can expect to see conditions improve quickly on the Main Stem Delaware. The current flow should positively influence the river temperatures throughout the section of river where we normally fish for

WEEKEND OUTLOOK Since my last report the weather in the Upper Delaware region has continued on a cooling trend. This week our daytime temperatures have been in the mid 70's rather than the 80's and our nights have been cool. This trend is expected to continue. We are expecting good weather over the Holiday Weekend. This week our freestone rivers have been following the same cooling trend. This morning all of our freestone waters are below 70 degrees. This is good news for our Trout populations. Anglers can expect the fishing to improve on the freestone rivers as soon as we string together a solid week or so of colder water temps. The East and West branches are still the best option for trou
