Upper Delaware Fly Fishing Report

The weather in the Upper Delaware has really cooled down over the last few days. We have had frost advisories the last 2 nights and I am seeing a lot of jackets and long pants around town.

For the Upper Delaware river and Fly Fishermen this cooler weather is great news. Over the last few days there has been a definite upswing in insect activity. The last 2 days there have been insects on the water and in the air throughout the day.

The Trout are not totally convinced yet and the surface feeding has remained sporadic but this will normally change quickly once the weather stays cool. We should see reliable dry fly fishing daily as soon as the Blue WIng Olive hatch gets established.

The nymph action remains very good and anglers who are persistent will be able to keep their rods bent throughout the day. Small Pheasant tails, copper johns, ice pupas and soft hackles are working well.

If you are thinking about getting out for some Delaware River fly fishing action now is a good time. Our guided trips have been great and we have several options at this time. There is a pretty good streamer bite on the West Branch and there are enough risers to keep the dry fly folks busy. Olives have been very good at times. Below is a nice Rainbow from this weekend.

The Main Stem is fishing well if you cover a lot of water. There is mixed action with both nymph rigs and dry flies. The best action remains around the sections of faster water, riffles, pocket water. This is where the insect activity has been best.

The Upper East also has normal late summer / autumn conditions. The flows here are steady and the trout and insects are in a reliable schedule. Tricos, Olives and some Isonychia are about. This river is always very challenging and late season is no different. Long leaders, small flies and stalking like a heron are required.

The Beaverkill, Willowemoc and Lower East Branch are really low. We are not guiding nor are we recommending these rivers until some rainfall occurs.

We have a few openings this week for guided trips on the Delaware. We are also offering Salmon River trips at this time. Give us a call today to book your next trip. 607-290-4022
