Fly Fishing Report for the Upper Delaware and Catskill Rivers

Saturday Update With the air/water temperatures dropping trout in the upper systems have become more active. The west branch has been fishing good this last week ripping streamers on the banks but yesterday fish were seen and being caught eating off the top. With 1110 CFS out of the Cannonsville the West Branch is running cold and is ideal for feeding trout. The East Branch is still low but has cold water in the upper parts but with the weather change may reduce temps in the lower parts as well. The fishing is good on the east but can be technical due to low flows. The main stem is also fishing very well with help of the heat ending. We did get a small volume of rain last night but not enou

WEEKEND OUTLOOK All of the photos in today's blog post are from yesterday's great action. All of our guests have been having excellent fishing! The weather is changing and the Trout are more active. This weekends fly fishing should be the best in a while. At this time there is still a heavy release of 1200 cfs. from Cannonsville reservoir. This cold water release has the West branch and the Main Stem fishing well. The Upper East has also been Ice cold but low. It is fishing well but it is always a very challenging place to consistently fool wild trout. Our other rivers The Beaverkill, Willowemoc and Lower East Branch are now cooling down. They are all very low and in need of some rainfall.

Autumn Weather Returns! All of our recent float trips have been non stop action with Wild Rainbows like the one Mike Gartland is posing with! This morning we woke to a cool breezy day. We are now forecast for more seasonable weather where 60 degree days should be the norm. This is good news as our freestone rivers are very low. We can expect the weather change to quickly impact the Beaverkill, Willowemoc and Lower East branch. These are the rivers that got really warm and needed the break the most. Withing a few days the waters should be in a good range for both Insects and Trout. The other rivers, West Branch, East Branch and Main Stem remain great from the releases. The East has a normal

MORE WATER FOR THE WEST BRANCH! This morning the West Branch is higher than yesterday. The release from Cannonsville has increased to 1123 cfs. This is great news for a good section of the River System since we are still forecast for a few more days of 85 degree heat. Right now under the current release the entire West Branch and most of the Trout waters of the Main Stem are in good shape. The Upper East is also Ice Cold. Anglers should however avoid fishing the Beamoc Water and the Lower East for Trout if the water temps. are up near 70 degrees. Over the weekend our guests had very good fishing. Our guides took full advantage of the Ice cold water and were able to put our guests into steady

SATURDAY UPDATE! Since my report yesterday the release from Cannonsville Reservoir into the West Branch has been increased. This morning anglers will find the West to be running high with turbidity due to a 953 cfs. increase. The good news is that the increase combined with a chilly overnight has the Main Delaware dropping temperature rapidly. This morning Lordville is at 60 degrees and Callicoon is at 66 degrees and falling. This is great news for the river system especially since we are forecast for a few more 80 degree plus days with bright sun. Anglers can expect the turbidity in the west to start clearing up in the lower reaches and becoming clear in the Upper Main. AS always some large

Summer in September The cool weather that had kicked the fishing into high gear was short lived. Over the last several day summer has returned to the mountains. Bright sunny days and mid 80's air temperatures have been with us for a week. This trend is expected to continue for at least a few more days. This weather combined with lack of any substantial rainfall has all Upper Delaware rivers running very low. There is simply not a lot of water at this time and there none in the forecast. Late yesterday there was a big spike in the release into the West Branch which has now dropped back to the low 600's. This is good news for this area since the release is double what it has been. Last week th

Starting this week you can find us on Roscoe's Main Street, Stewart Ave. We are now located right next door from the Pharmacy and directly across the street from the big parking lot. Hungry Trout Everywhere! Last week every Baxter House float trip was very good. The Trout are making up for the less than perfect conditions of summer. Every local river has great conditions and the Trout are feeding throughout the day. The insects hatches are pretty steady and most days there is a buffet of different insects on the water. For the next few weeks fishing the water with a big Isonychia pattern will keep your rod bent. Overall our guides are sticking with the simple strategy of fishing the Dry Fly when the trout are rising. We focus the rest of the time to nymphing the likely holding areas. Many times we will quickly run the ISO rig over an area before we nymphit just to check

Weekend Outlook The photos in today's report are Luc and Mike toughing it out in some dreary weather. They hung in through a tough morning but got the job done when the fish woke up and took to the surface! This weekend is shaping up to offer us Fly Fishermen some great opportunity. It has been rainy the last 2 days and all of our local rivers have risen a bit. All of our waters are still low enough to offer us about unlimited fishing access. Water temperatures are in the range for trout and insects to be active. If you are planning to fish in the coming days make sure you have some colder weather gear. Even though we have sunny weather coming daytime highs are expected to remain cool. I jus

GOOD CONDITIONS, GOOD HATCHES and GOOD FISHING Over the last week the overall fishing has become reliable. There are insects on the water through most of the day now. The waters are cool again and the Trout are active. Isonychia and Olives have been keeping the fish busy. The last 2 days the Isonychia have been emerging well mid afternoon. As for the rest of the rest of the report I will let this past weekends photos tell the story. Look for a more detailed fly fishing report towards the end of the week along with some additional Baxter House News.
