Fly Fishing Report for the Upper Delaware River and Catskill Streams

Over the last week some fall weather moved into the mountains. Very cool nights along with much cooler days have dropped the water temperature in all of our local rivers. The extended forecast is calling for about perfect weather for outdoor pursuits. We are expecting daytime air temperature in the mid 70's and overnights in the 50's. Our local Trout have noticed the change and this week our guides have seen a major change in Trout activity. I was on the water 5 out of the last 7 days and for the first time in a while I have been choosing Trout over Smallmouth Bass most days. Recently our guides have been on the Upper East Branch, Upper West Branch and Upper Main Stem. Every day recently has

Weekend Outlook This weekend marks the 50th. anniversary of Woodstock so there are lots of activities planned around the county this weekend. The concerts at Bethel Woods and the Music festival in Callicoon already have people pouring into the area. The weather forecast looks a bit tough for concert goers but it looks great for Trout fishermen. Over the next week the forecast is predicting overcast skies and a chance of rain every day. Over the past month every day that has been overcast has provided exceptional dry fly fishing. Last week on the 2 days with similar weather I had 5 straight hours of rising fish each day. Here is the current weather forecast and the current river flows. The r

Understanding Streamer Flies and Trout

For the last several years streamer fishing has been going through a huge popularity boom. You don’t have to look further than all the hash tags on social media to realize just how deep the streamer fly has embedded itself into our newest generation of fly anglers. The current fervor is easy to understand. Streamers always catch big trout. Tying streamers flies is also one of the areas where anglers can express themselves at the tying vise. The last few years have spawned thousands of new patterns and with new innovative materials hitting the market each year the trend is sure to continue. With the sheer number of patterns sold commercially it is overwhelming when an angler stands in front o

Weekend Outlook Cooler Weather and Thunder Storms Over the last week we have had thunder storms every afternoon. These storms along with some cooler air temperatures have improved river conditions around the region. Our rivers have been getting a lot of quick bursts of new water. This has been a great re-charge for the normally low warm flows of summer. This week our guides have seen a nice bump in our local trout's enthusiasm towards surface feeding. During 2 of the overcast days this week my guests had non stop rising Trout throughout our entire float trip. The reliable dry fly fishing should continue and even improve as we head towards the cooler weather that normally arrives in September

Summer Conditions We are now at the half way point of our summer conditions. There are lots of options for fishing our area at this time. Our guides have been very busy taking people fishing for a variety of species. Over the past few days we have had guests out for Trout both day and night. We have also put a few trips out each day for Smallmouth Bass and Carp. Yesterday Guides Zach Anderson and Chris Dever took a group to the Main Stem for some Smallie action. Everyone caught a bunch! Guides Matt, Chris, and Rich did some night fishing for Trout. The action is pretty good and our guests have taking some nice Brown Trout. The photo below is Aiden Cornwell with a beautiful Delaware Brown Tro

Fishing Report for the Upper Delaware and Catskill Region

Weekend Outlook As we enter August we find the Upper Delaware and Catskill Regions still in the grips of a summer heat wave. We have had a few weeks of temperatures in the high 80''s to low 90's. During this period most of the rainfall that has been hitting other areas in the east has missed us. We have been getting some passing thunder storms but no real lasting rainfall. Overall a pretty normal summer. Currently we have low water conditions around the region. There are a lot of options for anglers at this time. Trout fishing is very reliable in our tailwater rivers. The East Delaware, West Delaware and Neversink have great fishing conditions in the sections directly downstream from the icy
