Fly Fishing Report for the Upper Delaware and Catskill Rivers

WEEKEND OUTLOOK

This weekend we are expecting some rainy weather to move into the area for the first time in a while. This is good news for trout fishermen as our rivers could use an infusion of water at this time. If the forecast is correct we should have about perfect conditions for insects to be active all day.

Currently Sulfurs are the main staple in the trouts diet. This is the main insect on all of our local waters at this time. There are also lots of other insect species about but none as prolific as the sulfurs. Right now there are 2 distinct hatches of sulfurs. The larger Invaria sulfurs are emerging well during the afternoon hours. This insect emerges best in the icy waters of the upper West Branch and Upper East Branch. The higher up you go the more profuse this hatch tends to be. The smaller dorothea sulfurs are an evening event. most days the action start about an hour before dark but the fish normally don't fully engage in eating until the time when it gets tough to see. We have a full selection of flies in stock specifically for this summer time hatch.

There are also lots of larger insects about in varying numbers. Anglers can expect to see lingering Coffin Flies, Brown Drake and March Brown spinners. The trout will continue to eat these big bugs even well after the naturals have concluded their business for the year.

There are also a lot of Cahills emerging sporadically through the late afternoon. These are joined by a mix of other mayfly, caddisfly and stonefly species.

Blue WIng Olives are becoming more available and will continue this trend as summer progresses.. Right now there is an early day olive hatch in some areas. These are the bigger Cornuta olives. The smaller olives are showing most nights now, many times our tailwater fish will key in on these. With the rain forecast olives may be more active this weekend.
