Fly Fishing Report for the Upper Delaware and Catskill Rivers

Over the weekend our guides were very busy. We had lots of different trips head out. Over the last 3 days we have covered a lot of water and our guests have fished both Trout and Smallmouth Bass. We also had some late night Trout hunts on the tailwaters. Overall the fishing remains pretty good.

Below is a quick recap of what has been going on.

I have been on Trout trips for the last 6 days. All of my time has been split between the Upper West and Upper East Branches. Over this time we have been doing very well on nymphs during the mid day. I had 2 recent trips where we really ran the numbers up. The nymph action has been steady so I have only been fishing the dry fly right near dark. Every trip we have been able to add 2 or 3 fish on the dry to our catch.

I also had the pleasure this week of guiding a great young man on his first fly fishing trip. This guy stuck with the fly rod and made incredible progress with both the nymph and dry fly rods. He was able to hook several fish from the West Branch on both methods. Below was the first to come to net right at dark. Prior to that he had dry fly hookups on some big mature fish that gave us the slip.

Guide Zach has been mixing up his trips. Over the last few days he has been all around the system with Trout, Smallmouth and some night trips. His Bass trips have been killing it. Big numbers of fish and lots of surface action. His guests also had good action in the dark with mouse and streamer patterns. The photos are from his last night trip.

Guide Matt has also been hitting it hard fishing both day and night. He has continued his hot hand for finding big Brown trout. This weekend his guests put some real beasts in the net.

On Saturday night Matt and Guide Chris kept their group out well into darkness and this strategy produced another 2 footer for one of our guests..

At this time the overall conditions are improving a bit each day. The weather has not been real hot so the water temperatures are staying in a place where the insects and trout can be active. Most of the system has also been getting regular rainfall which is keeping the river flows in a nice place for us fly fishermen.

The hatches remain steady with tricos in the mornings. Sulfurs, Olives, Isonychia and Cahills are the dinner time insects. Midges and terrestrials can produce a few riser at any time.

Nymphs are a sure thing now if you keep it small. #18 and smaller nymphs will keep a bend in your rod if you fish the riffles and cover a lot of water.
