Fly Fishing Report for the Upper Delaware and Catskill Rivers

FROST IN THE CATSKILLS

This morning the rain and overcast skies cleared as a cold front pushed into the area. This morning we woke to below freezing temperatures and outside everything is covered in a layer of frost.

It is expected to get up to the mid 50's today and that is what we are expecting daily for the next 5 days. Cool weather in May along with high water everywhere should set us up for a very long trout season.

Yesterday was a tough day on the river for all of our guests. The high water combined with high winds made it tough to hit the spots consistently. The cold weather also seemed to slow the trout activity considerably.

Over the last 2 days the best action has been very late in the day. This is when the most insects have been active. Late day has also been the time when the Trout have been surface feeding. Yesterday the surface feeding was sporadic and found only in the slowest pools.

Today should bring us a slight improvement since the water levels have dropped a bit. Today's bright sun should also go a long way with warming the water. Overall however I do not expect to see the action turn back to great until the waters get back to wadable levels.

Tonight we unfortunately have another front moving into the area. It is forecast to stay cold and rain. The rain is now forecast for a half inch or more. This amount of rain on already saturated mountains is sure to move the river up again or at least keep them from going down.

I will update the report if anything significant occurs.
