Upper Delaware Fly Fishing Report

WINTER RETURNS

Over the weekend winter returned to the Upper Delaware Region. Cold weather, rain and snow squalls and high winds are what mother nature dealt us.

Despite the miserable weather our guests managed to put some nice Trout in the net.

In the coming days anglers who plan on fishing will find slightly warmer conditions. Our days are forecast for mid 50's with overnights in the high 30's to low 40's. Not exactly what you would expect in May but great weather for the river environment and the trout.

This week there is rainfall in the forecast for mid week but the amounts are unclear at this time.

This week anglers will find our rivers to be on the high side except the upper East Branch which is at a great wading flow. The West is much higher than it was but it is still easily wadable.

The Beaverkill, Willowemoc and Main Stem are up a bit and some sections may be quite challenging to get in the water. The best news regarding flows is that where the best wading conditions are is also where the most reliable hatches are. The East and West Branches are my top picks for the near future.

At this time anglers can expect to see a variety of insects. On the water are - Hendricksons, Blue Quills, Olives, March Browns, Sulfurs, Mixed Caddisflies and Stoneflies. At the current flows the best action is still in the slower water and the light choppy nervous water that is about 2' deep.

Our guests have also been throuwing some streamers during this high water period with good success. Stop by our shop before heading out. We have a large selection of custom streamer patterns that we have developed over the years for our local waters.

The recent cold weather has really slowed the action in the Upper Delaware. What initially started as a year that brought us early insect activity has changed back to near normal timing. At this time the best dry fly action is still ahead of us. For the remainder of the spring we should be near our normal emergence periods for our larger insects. If the cold and gray days persist the hatches could progress at a crawl.

We are now taking bookings daily for the spring and summer season. We still have some prime dates available in May and June including the Prime time for large insects during the 3rd and 4th week of the month. This is drake time!
