Upper Delaware Fly Fishing Report

Today and tomorrow we are expecting our first real dose of spring. We are forecast to have daytime air temperatures in the high 50's.

This warm weather should finally start some serious snow melt.

Yesterday there was a decent amount of anglers taking advantage of the bright sunny day. Most anglers are fishing the Beaverkill, Willowemoc and Upper East Branch. These are the places that are mostly ice free at this time.

I did not hear of many fish being caught but there were a few really impressive Trout taken.

At this time the Beaverkill, WIllowemoc and East Branch have slow early season fishng. Most of the Main Delaware still has frozen pools and this river is still not fishable by boat.

At this time there are some Stoneflies and Midges on the water. With the low water conditions there is some sporadic rising late in the day.

The best bet is still nymphs and streamers fished slow and deep. Anglers fshing should remember that this was a heavy ice year on all of our rivers. The Trout will only be in the deeper areas until the insect hatches get established. To have success you need to focus on the drop offs that lead into the heads of pools and in the deeper slow eddies.

Anglers planning to fish in the near future should be aware that the waters are bound to rise from the warmer weather and from the light rain that is forecast for Friday. All of our local stream gauges are not yet operational due to ice. You can give us a call in the fly shop for up to date info on river conditions.
