Opening Day 2015

This morning we have a light dusting of new snow to welcome the start of another Trout season in the Upper Delaware region. Anglers should expect to find slow Trout fishing in the coming days.

The last week has been quite cold and we have been getting snow squalls most days. Today the weather is forecast to warm up and hopefully end winters grip on the area. The next few days are forecast to be well above freezing.

Anglers planning to fish will find our local rivers to be low and clear at this time. Despite the snow covered river banks the actual streams are at excellent wading levels.

The Beaverkill and WIllowemoc are free of ice and will offer lots of river miles to try your luck. The Branches of the Delaware have open water but have some bank ice in a lot of places.

The Main Delaware is still frozen over in most of the long slow pools. We are expecting warm weather and rainfall later in the week which should get the ice moving downstream.

Succes at this time of year has a lot to do with persistence. Anglers need to work the water slow and deep with streamers, buggers, and nymphs. Some of my favorite flies for early season include BH Copper Johns, BH Pheasant Tails, Cased Caddis and Caddis Pupa.

There have been some sporadic risers on warm sunny days. Look for this action after 3:00 pm. There are midges and tiny stoneflies about. My favorite dries for early season are Small Traditional Elk Hair Caddis, Elk Over CDC Caddis and both Catskill Style and CDC Blue Quills.
