Upper Delaware Fly Fishing Report

LATE OCTOBER REPORT

There will not be much change in the Upper Delaware action from this point until we are iced in. This will be my final update for the Upper Delaware fishing conditions for 2016. Look for me to begin blogging again around November 20. From late November through April I will be giving updates on the Florida Flats and Back Country action in and around Tampa Bay.

THE REPORT

The cold weather Blue WIng Olives are on the water daily now. Every day there is a great window of opportunity where the Trout are rising well. Most days the action is lasting from 3 to 4 hours in duration. If you have always wanted to see the heavy olive hatches in late autumn now is the time to get our on the water.

Over the last week the trout are not selective at all. Most every fish that we are able to cast to will readily eat the fly. I have been rigging my clients with Knock down duns, Hackled Cripples and traditional Catskill style dries. #18 is still the only size I have been using. I am still setting the rigs up with around 15' leaders tapered to 6X tippet.

Anglers who want to fish in the coming days should pick their days wisely. I have been out every day for the last few weeks and can tell you that the weather has been mostly brutal. There have been a few sunny afternoons but we are on a current string of weather that can turn you into a popsicle quickly. The last few days have been on and off snow squalls with 25+ mph wind gusts.

The photo below was taken this morning in my parking lot.

There is a forecast for a return to more seasonable weather in the coming days. This few day window may be the last chance to fish the dry fly in comfort this season. Below is a photo of a Rainbow taken a few days ago during a brief afternoon warm up.

I will continue to offer float trips until November 13. I have a few openings mid week in this time period. If you want to get out for some dry fly action give me a call.

Starting in late November my reports will shift to reporting the conditions in and around Tampa Bay. I will update a report every few days so you can see how the action is on the flats down south.

I am currently taking bookings for Fly Fishing and Light Tackle trips from late November through April 2017. I have both full and half day options that target Snook, Redfish, Speckled Trout, Tarpon and more. Give us a call today to reserve your dates. 607-290-4022
