Upper Delaware Fly Fishing Report

Yesterday rain fell for most of the day which made for some tough fishing conditions. There is more rainfall expected tomorrow. Today is the day to get out over this weekend. There is a forecast for mixed sun and clouds and no rain. The March Browns are on the water on the freestone rivers. There are still Hendricksons, Blue Quills and Caddisflies on the Tailwaters. Here is a photo from yesterday. Hendrickson and March Brown Spinners are now possible on all Upper Delaware waters. The Trout are now spreading out and at this time there are fish holding in all water types. The action in the riffles and pocket water is improving daily. Currently our guides are fishing March Brown nymphs, Pheasan

WEEKEND OUTLOOK This weekend is forecast to bring us some rainfall. Over the next 3 days there are rain showers predicted for later today and Sunday. Rain Squalls are possible at any time. This could be tough conditions for anglers if the forecast is correct. It will most likely however be excellent for insect activity and dry fly fishing. March Browns normally emerge in much steadier numbers during rainy days. The March Brown hatch is underway and there have been enough hatching that there were a good amount of March Brown spinners in the air yesterday. All of our recent guide trips have gone well with our guests taking some beautiful Trout. Over the last few days we have taken Trout with

WEDNESDAY MARCH BROWNS ARE ON THE WATER! Yesterday some rainfall occurred in the mountains. The rain was not very heavy and overall it had minor impact on river flows. The next few days are expected to be sunny with normal spring daytime air temps. Our nights are expected to remain chilly with temps. dropping into the 30's. This type of weather should keep the river temperatures in a great place. The hatches are progressing quickly this year. Over the last few days March Browns began hatching from Main Stem Delaware waters. This activity is improving daily and the Trout are taking them. The Wild Rainbows are starting to get active! MONDAY March Browns are on the water! The hatches are progressing quickly this year. Over the weekend March Browns began hatching from Main Stem Delaware waters. This activity was not real heavy nor was it widespread but there were enough numbers that the Trout were taking them. The other news over the last few days is that the Wild Rainbows are starting to get active. Every year the April activity is always dominated by Brown Trout and the Bows are scarce. As has been the case with the hatches the Rainbows are becoming active a bit earlier than normal. The last few trips are finally bringing us Nymph action in just about every riffle and there are finally a few big Rainbows feeding on the

WEEKEND OUTLOOK This weekend should offer great fishing conditions for visiting anglers. Currently every Upper Delaware river is in good shape. All of our rivers are crystal clear and a bit low for the date. Water temperatures are optimum for both insects and Trout. All of the Baxter House Guides have been on the water every day with guests. We have been finding lots of action for our guests and have brought lots of BIG trout to net this week on both dries and nymphs. Below are 2 photos from my Main Stem Float yesterday. Currently the Best Emergence of Mayflies are on the tailwaters. The West Branch is pumping out Hendrickson's. The other rivers seem to be somewhat past the peak of emergence

Over the last 2 days the Mayfly emergence of Quill Gordons and Hendricksons have continued with huge spinner flights joining the hatch in late afternoon. Yes

All of our rivers are in excellent shape at this time. All rivers are bank full and the water temperatures are great for both insects and Trout. Over the next few days of warm weather we should start to see some dropping water. Below are the current flows B

WEEKEND OUTLOOK This weekend looks like it will be the first real good opportunity of the season where anglers can expect to see excellent action. Yesterday our guests continued enjoying good action across a wide area of the system. Below is a nice mature Rainbow taken on my boat yesterday. This Trout took a knock down dun. The fishing has been very good all week. The insect hatches are reliable and very heavy. The Water temperatures across the system are in a range where all of the Trout are up and actively feeding. In addition to the great river conditions the weather is forecast for nothing but sunshine and air temps. in the mid 50's to low 60's. The Baxter House guides have been busy si

WEDNESDAY The DRY FLY action is on! In the Upper Delaware River System you can find good fishing just about every day if you are persistent. Every year there are always a few days that really really stand out as exceptional and yesterday will probably be one of those days that stand out in 2016. The sheer amount of insects that poured from the water yesterday was astounding. On the section of water that I floated there were pools that were totally covered with clumps of Mayfly Duns that were knocked down and crippled from the strong winds. What really made yesterday special was that it was the first day of this season where you could say that every fish in the river was up and feeding on t

TUESDAY This morning there is still some light rain lingering around in the mountains. This front is expected to move out by mid day today and some warmer weather should take it's place. Yesterday's rain did not have much impact on the river flows. This morning all of our rivers are at similar flow rates as yesterday or are up a bit. The Mayfly hatches are underway in the Upper Delaware System. Anglers can now expect to find rising trout every day. Over the next few days anglers should get their first real chance to fish in some pleasant weather since the Trout opener on April 1. If you plan on fishing in the coming days you can now take good Trout on Dries, Nympsh and Streamers. At the cur

MONDAY Yesterday was a good day on the river despite the cold weather. The insect hatches are underway and there was a decent emergence on all rivers yesterday. There are Blue Quills, Quill Gordons and Hendrickson's on the water. The amount of insects vary on the river section but there are enough insects to bring the Trout to the surface. Anglers planning on fishing in the coming days should make sure they choose slow water sections of the river with small uniformly shaped river cobble. These are the areas where there will be the most insects and the best rising activity. Yesterday our guests had pretty good action. Currently you can take fish on Dries, Nymphs and Streamers. SUNDAY This morning the day dawned with the sun out and no snow squalls. This is the first day in a while where we are not expecting snow squalls or rainfall. Today winter is also forecast to loosen it's grip on the Upper Delaware region. Beginning tomorrow we are expecting more springlike conditions with air temperatures around 50 degrees. Over the past week we cancelled or rescheduled all of our guided trips so I have little to report directly from the river. We resumed our guiding schedule today and do not anticipate any further cancellations for the remainder of the spring season. I expect this coming week to offer good fishing. There is no reason that the action won't quickly rebound wi

Please note - During yesterdays heavy winds and rain the Baxter House phone lines went down.. We have no idea when they will be fixed. Please use 607-348-7497 to contact us. WEEKEND OUTLOOK This morning we have clearing skies and the winds are gone. All Upper Delaware rivers are at high water conditions this morning. All have crested and are starting to recede but it should be a slow trip back to low water. This is good news for the system as flows were way too low for April. Anglers can expect turbidity for the next day or two. How bad will depend on where you are and how close you are to tributaries and areas of river bank destabilization. This high and turbid water is just what we love an

We are still stuck in what is hopefully our last stretch of winter weather. Over the last few days snow and below freezing temperatures have curtailed trout fishing for all but the most die hard and crazy anglers. This morning we warmed up a bit and we are currently getting some steady rainfall. By this evening we could see as much as an inch of rainfall. This combined with the 8" to 12" of snow in the mountains should get the river gauges moving upwards and provide a nice refresh to the system. The weather is forecast to get warmer at the start of next week. It looks like our days will get back to more seasonable temperatures in the 50"s. In the event that the rivers get high and off color

SNOW DAY #2 Not much has changed in the Upper Delaware in the last 2 days. Winter conditions persist and the forecast for the next few days remains the same. The photos below show the current conditions. They were taken this morning. We are expecting another 3 to 4 inches of accumulation today. When this melts off later in the week it should provide a nice refresher to our low water conditions.

This morning winter returned to the Upper Delaware Region. During the overnight several inches of fresh snow covered the region. We are forecast for another 3 to 5 inches today. This weather will make conditions tough for fishing the next few days. THe forecast for the week is for a colder trend through the next few days before warming a bit towards next weekend. This cold snap is sure to put a bump in the great fishing that we have been having. I will be sure to update conditions as they improve. The 2016 Trout Season is now underway. Yesterday I had my first float of the season on the Main Stem. We had some unpredictable weather and gusty winds but the fishing was very good for opening day. Currently we are fishing with low water conditions across the entire Upper Delaware System. Water temperatures are in the low to mid 50's in the freestone rivers and in the 40's on the East and West Branches. These conditions should remain constant until we get some heavy rainfall. There is a cold front forecast for the next few days that include some wintry weather. We are expecting a few inches of snowfall over the weekend. On yesterday's float trip we had rising fish from the first pool and

OPENING DAY 2016

April 1 is here and Trout fishing is now open across New York State. Today the season kicked off with warm weather and low water conditions. This is a rare circumstance in Roscoe on the Opener. There was a good crowd at Junction Pool this morning for the traditional first Cast. We currently have overcast skies and some rainfall is expected today and tonight. The extent of the precipitation is always a crap shoot. In the event that our rivers rise quickly I will do a post update. Currently there is good fishing about everywhere. Our guides have been out on the water and doing well. The conditions are now well ahead of a normal weather year. Recently our guides have had lots of success on nym
