Baxter House is located in Roscoe, New York. For outdoor enthusiasts the area around Roscoe is truly a paradise.

Roscoe is located just at the edge of the Catskill Park and within the Upper Delaware River System. Our small town is the Gateway to thousands of acres of public land and the Finest Trout fishing in the Eastern United States.

Our Local Waters have been among America’s favorite Trout Fishing Streams since the early 19th. Century.  Because of our Pristine Waters and World Class Fishing,  Roscoe was one of the first resort destinations in the United States.

The number of Famous Anglers and Fly Tyers connected with the region are numerous, and include Theodore Gordon, Rube Cross, AE Hendrickson, Joan and Lee Wulff, Harry and Elsie Darbee, Walt and Winnie Dette, and others.  The waters that they fished are considered the Birth Place of American Fly Fishing.

Today Visiting Anglers still flock to Roscoe but these days our town is more of a “Home Base” to the entire region. Within a half hour’s ride of town anglers can enjoy Wade and Drift Boat Fishing on 5 of America’s Top Trout Waters and Small Mouth Bass Fishing on the Delaware which was recently ranked in the top 5 smallmouth rivers in the country. From Roscoe it is possible to fish the Beaverkill, Willowemoc, East Branch, West Branch and Main Delaware all in the same day.

The pristine waters of the Region are home to a vast array of aquatic insects.  Throughout the fishing season anglers are treated to profuse hatches of Mayflies, Caddisflies and Stoneflies.  The sheer abundance of insects is overwhelming at times and newcomers are sometimes awestruck as they stand in the midst of a snowstorm like flight of Caddisflies. This abundance of insects however is the reason that Fly Fishermen have held our rivers in such high esteem for nearly 2 centuries.

Our River fishing always seems to get the most attention but the opportunity for fishing in Ponds, Lakes and Reservoirs is equally world class. Our rugged mountains are covered with ponds and lakes teeming with fish. Most all of our high mountain lakes have Wild Brook Trout and some of these majestic lakes produce trophy sized Brookies every year.

Just 10 miles outside Roscoe lies Pepacton Reservoir and 15 minutes beyond Pepacton lies Cannonsville.

Pepacton is the largest of New York City’s reservoirs.  Pepacton is over 16 miles long and 160 feet deep. This Reservoir provides over 25% of NY city’s drinking water and it is also the home to Brown Trout that grow to giant proportions.  Trout in this reservoir are abundant and each year during the annual trout derby fish in the 15 pound range take the annual honors and bragging rights.

Fishing is permitted both from shore and from boat. There are no motors allowed on Pepacton or Cannonsville Reservoirs.

Anglers will find success with a variety of methods from Drifting live bait, trolling spoons and plugs or casting from the shore.

Although sometimes overshadowed by the premier Trout Fishing both Pepacton and Cannonsville are trophy waters for smallmouth Bass. The rocky shoreline and abundant coves are prime habitat for the Bronzeback and fish in the 4-5 pound range are common.

Throughout the year our mountains offer many other activities in addition to fishing. Hunting has a long tradition in the area. Visiting hunters will find plenty of opportunity in our mountains for both Big and Small Game and Waterfowl.

Canoeists and Kayakers will find our waters among the most scenic that they have traveled.  Paddlers are treated to postcard like views around every bend in the river.  Our rivers have a variety of water types which are perfect for paddlers of every experience level.

Hikers, Nature Walkers and Photographers will find hundreds of miles of marked trails within a short distance of town. Our trail system will take you to some of the most beautiful vistas and lead you to some spectacular ponds and waterfalls. During winter these hiking trails are open to snowmobiles.

After enjoying your day in the mountains or on the water, Roscoe welcomes visitors back to town. We have a Friendly Down Town full of Unique Shops and Eateries.  Within only a few blocks guest can choose from 9 different restaurants.
