Wade Fishing

We recommend a wade trip for Anglers who are new to fishing the Upper Delaware System. All of our walk wades are instructional.  During a wade trip you can expect your guide to cover topics including fly fishing techniques, insect identification and fly choice, safe wading techniques, reading the water and more. All while you fish!

We spend the majority of our wade fishing time on the waters of the Beaverkill and Willowemoc. It is our goal to provide our clients with a good understanding of the access points and water types so that future visits will start with confidence.

For anglers who are experienced, walk wading with one of our guides can insure a rewarding day on the stream. Our guide staff is on the river daily and they know the areas with the best insect activity and fishing on any given day.

For the confident angler, our guides can offer instruction on many topics. Some of which include; river hydrology and fishing the different water types, entomology and stages of the hatch, daily and seasonal movements of Upper Delaware Trout and more.

Drift Boat Adventures

An Upper Delaware Float Trip is surely an adventure that will be remembered for a lifetime.  The sheer beauty of the River Valleys and the abundance of hungry Trout are a Fly Fisherman's Dream!

The Trips: We have many different float trip options available.

We are floating the East Branch, West Branch and Main Stem of the Delaware both Full and 1/2 day.

Our full day floats usually cover 8 to 10 miles per day. Our 1/2 day evening floats are usually 3 to 5 miles, but geared towards putting you in the perfect spot for the Evening Hatch and Spinner fall.

Our guides are experts at choosing the River and section to float based on the habitat of the insects that are hatching. It is our goal to keep you casting to feeding fish whenever possible.

Our guides will always have extra rods rigged and offer advice and techniques to entice the Upper Delaware Trout during the "non hatch" periods. By days end our guests will sometimes have fished from top to bottom with Dries, Nymphs and Streamers.

All of our guides have New, Modern McKenzie style drift boats for your comfort and safety.

Our Staff

Keith Cantrell- aka the Preacher. Keith has been with us for a few years now. Currently he is managing the daily operations of the fly shop and Tying flies to keep our bins filled with local patterns. Keith originally came to our area as the interim pastor of the Baptist congregation in nearby Walton. Upon completion of his term with the church Keith and his family decided to stay in the area. Recently Keith has started a new business venture called mayflyphotographic.  Over the course of this fishing season Keith has captured some awesome photographic images of our local insects and combined them with his hand made cherry wood frames to create some fine art displays. He is offering framed prints alone and with mounted flies tied by local tyer's.

Keith's work can be viewed in our Fly Shop, at other downtown shops and at www.mayflyphotographic.com.

Frank Healy - Frank learned to fly fish on the waters of the Croton system in Westchester and Putnam counties riding his bicycle to many of his favorite streams. A member of Croton watershed chapter of Trout Unlimited he still fishes the Croton East Branch, Amawalk, Croton Falls and the Croton and Hudson River for stripers . In 1985 he came to Roscoe and fell in love with the Beaverkill and Delaware system. He loves to walk-wade, and will walk to the less fished areas of the rivers. "Living 20 feet from the Beaverkill allows you to observe and design flies on the spot". Many groups and beginners have been out with Frank, his instruction and easy manner have started many men, women, and children on a path to fly fishing. Basic, intermediate, or advanced he can teach it all.

Rich Hudgens - Guide Rich will be starting his second year with us this spring. Rich has been fishing Catskill waters most of his life.  Ever since he got his hand on one of his father’s fly rods at age 14 Rich has been honing his skills.

Rich’s early introduction to Trout fishing came on the waters of the Esopus and Beaverkill. It wasn’t long however before Rich’s fishing habit had him expanding his range. After fishing the waters of the Delaware River Rich knew he found his true calling. Over time he learned the necessary skills to consistently fool the large and challenging Trout that live here. At this time he also realized that he had the knowledge and patience to teach others. For Rich becoming a guide was a natural progression.

Rich has been handling both Drift Boat and Walk Wade Trips for us. His never ending enthusiasm and hands on approach to instruction have been an instant hit with our customers!  Rich also regularly fishes the tributaries to Lake Ontario and he will be joining us this autumn during our Salmon and Steelhead camp and planning one of our Upcoming Trophy Brown Trout Trips.

Ray Miller -  Guide Ray has been fishing for most of his life. Ray's interest in fly fishing started in the mid 80's and he cut his teeth on the Historic Limestone Streams of South Central Pennsylvania and the waters of the Upper Delaware System.Over the last 20 years Ray has immersed himself in the fly fishing life. Over this time Ray has been involved with many clubs and organizations as a Fly Fishing and Fly Tying instructor. Currently Guide Ray is a licensed fishing guide in both New York and Montana.  From April through June Ray will be floating the waters of the Upper Delaware with Baxter House Guests.  During the Summer months Guide Ray operates "Ray's Montana Adventure" providing local anglers with a top notch tour of some of Montana's finest Trout Waters. Ray is also affiliated with lodges in Northern Quebec and Alaska.

Darren Rist -  Guide Darren truly loves to be on the water. Darren has been fishing the waters of the Upper Delaware for 14 years.  When he's not out guiding, you can find him designing and selling hydraulic systems or casting a fly on the pool below his home on the West Branch of the Delaware. Darren is also the president of his local Trout Unlimited Chapter and an avid fly tyer. The following is guide Darren's response when asked, Why he became a Fly Fishing Guide? "Well, first I wanted to become a professional Trout bum, but my wife didn't approve. Guiding was the next best thing. Making a career out of something you love is the American Dream. I have a passion for fly fishing. I enjoy meeting interesting people. I like to teach. I don't mind untangling hundreds of leader knots a year. I guess it was just fate".

Ken Tutalo - Ken, the owner of the Baxter House River Outfitters has been fishing the waters of the Upper Delaware for over 30 years. Over the last 8 years while operating the Baxter House, Ken has shared his knowledge and love of the local waters with hundreds of people.  When not guiding or helping customers in the Fly Shop, Ken can usually be found stalking the glass like pools of the East Branch for Wary Browns or wading the pockets of the Lower Beaverkill for Wild Rainbows.

During the winter months Ken is a regular at the Winter Fly Fishing and Fly Tying Shows where he demonstrates fly tying techniques and gives seminars on topics pertaining to the Upper Delaware River System and Fly Fishing for Trout.

Ken also publishes the daily fishing report on the Baxter House Website, which is read by thousands weekly from April through November. Ken has also appeared on Fly Fishing DVD’s and on television. His most recent project was the Discovery Channel Program “Fishing Road Trip USA” which appeared on Discovery Travel last winter.
