Big Game - Whitetail Deer and Black Bear
About our deer hunting- We are often asked about our local deer herd and the quality of the hunts in our area. To best describe what the region offers the deer hunter one must first understand the rugged nature of our area. Our mountains can be best classified as “Big Woods”. Our forests are a mix of mature evergreen, hardwood and fruit trees that grow on steep rocky slopes. Our whitetails thrive in these big woods but to the hunter these same woods offer a very challenging hunt.
Every year
some truly impressive bucks are harvested in our area although most of the bucks
we see are scrappy 4,5 ad 6 pointers.
As an outfitter we know that every day spent in these beautiful mountains is top quality hunt! This is why we set our goal at putting our guests in the best possible scenario to harvest game and let the individual decide what a trophy is to them.
The 2008 season was very good for our hunters. The last few years of restriction on the harvesting of antlerless deer has increased the whitetail population nicely. During the past season Bucks were plentiful and our guests had fine opportunity during both the Bow and Firearm seasons. Overall our group of 8 hunters harvested 3 bucks and 2 antlerless deer during the firearm season. One interesting note on this subject was the fact that we did not harvest an animal during the initial week of the firearm season.
For the 2009 season we have several hunt options planned for our guests. Our big game hunts are conducted on the thousands of acres of Local State Forest as well as on some smaller private and leased parcels. We limit our bookings to 6 hunters per week to insure personal attention throughout your stay with us.
Bow Hunting - The 2009 season is set to open the Saturday following the second Monday in October (Columbus Day) and continue through to the day prior to the opening of the Regular Deer Season, and the nine days immediately following the close of the Regular (firearm) Deer Season.
During the 2009 Bow Season we will be offering semi-guided deer hunts throughout the entire season. Our semi guided hunts include Lodging, Use of Stands and Blinds, Transportation to and from Stands, Two way radios, field dressing and recovery of deer.
Our guides spend a large amount of time in the woods and scout thoroughly during the off season. They're intimate knowledge of the mountains and game habits help us to customize each hunt to our guests desires and abilities.
Our early bow hunts (first 2 weeks) offer hunters a great opportunity to hunt animals that are non pressured and still in fairly predictable routines. The weather at this time is pleasant and our mountains are in full color. Our hunts at this time focus mostly on feeding areas and the travel corridors which lead to these areas. During the final 2 weeks of the bow season rutting activity is usually underway. At this time deer activity is high and bucks are on the move, this is a prime time to be on stand! At this time we encourage our hunters to bring their portable tree stands.
Rifle Hunting - Rifle season for Deer and Bear begins on the third Saturday of November and runs for 23 days. During the rifle season our mountains are normally snow covered.
During the 2009 Rifle Season we will be offering Semi Guided hunts throughout the season. For the seasons opener and entire first week we will be offering stand hunts only. During the remainder of the season our hunts may include a combination of techniques including stand hunting, controlled drives and still hunting.
Muzzleloader / Late Season Bow - Runs for the 9 days immediately following the regular deer season.
